Peacemaker Interview

  1. What does visual peacemaking mean to you?

When I think of “Peacemaking”, I hear the opposite…peacekeeping.  One ignores the elephant in the room at Thanksgiving Dinner with all of your relatives, the other addresses the issue in a respectful manner and walks about in grace and forgiveness with said issue.  Confused?  Peacemaking exposes, Peacekeeping covers up.  I shoot for truth in my photos.

  2. What motivates you to be a peacemaker?

A small understanding that people are worth every bit of life that we have to offer.  If thats taking photos of them, washing dishes, laughing with them, drinking with them…just showing they are important.

  3. Have you ever felt stereotyped?

I think when walking around with a camera we all are immediately stereotyped and in many situations is very unfair and people can be blind to the fact that we are there to help and not harm…

  4. How does your camera get you to reflect on your world and your life?

For over a decade now I have been fortunate enough to be my cameras passenger.  I tease sometimes that people don’t want me to come but they just want the camera.  Currently, I get to inspire change among a generation longing for things to be different and I help people working hard for that change to sustain where they are at.

  5. What do you like to photograph best?

When I first started it was nature and landscapes…but there is just something about people now that I have been shooting for a while that brings a smile to my face and a drive for creating better images.  Like I said before people are worth it.

  6. What technical aspect of photography do you find most challenging?

I trust myself wide open or a slow shudder speed way to much….I have a hard time living with “f/8 and there!” for me it always seems to be “f/2.8 @1/20sec with 6400iso!”  Maybe its not that bad but sometimes I feel that way.

  7. Is there a particular group you feel is misunderstood or stereotyped that you’d like to document common humanity amongst?

Currently there isn’t any one group that I want to photograph but its always changing depending on whats infront of my lens….if there is an injustice going on infront of me or an organization comes to me asking to take photos that is what is important at that time…people are important.

  8. Do you have an idea worth sharing?

I thought I had an original idea recently until I started doing research on it….David Johnson beat me to it…. essentially inspiring people to take pictures of their local heros….that guy has it going on.  smile
