Peacemaker Interview

  1. What does visual peacemaking mean to you?

We are visual communicators devoted to peacemaking and breaking down stereotypes by displaying the beauty and dignity of various cultures around the world.

Now bring to that your own vision—how you see and feel—and visual peacemaking becomes deeply personal, which it must become for each one of us.

  2. What motivates you to be a peacemaker?

My surname, duChemin, means “of the road.” I was born, it seems, to travel. I am drawn to new places for their exotic nature, to meet new people and discover the differences between us that make the commonalities even more amazing. I wander, driven by my curiosity, wanting to see how others meet the challenge of being human. I want to capture it, show the diversity for the beautiful thing it is. I know I am not alone in this.

  3. How does your camera get you to reflect on your world and your life?

My camera is a means to making human connections and telling human stories, a simple tool to help me break down the walls between Us and Them, to show others that there’s something of us in every person, race or other that we’ve misunderstood or feared.

  4. What do you like to photograph best?

Well, I’ve said it before and will again: we shoot best what we love best. It can energize you, prolong your sanity, and improve the quality of your creative work.

My list grows and changes, but always includes children, laughter, play, color, textures, simple graphic lines, irony, odd juxtaposition, interesting faces, and expressions of faith.

  5. What technical aspect of photography do you find most challenging?

Search my blog for a post titled, “Confessions of a so-called pro,” and you’ll get to see the long list!

  6. Do you have an idea worth sharing?

You decide. Check out my blog!

More stuff about me...

Sponsors

I am proud to be sponsored by these leaders in the imaging industry. Their kind involvement allows me to go further in search of compelling stories.

Adobe products form the backbone of my digital workflow.

Gitzo makes some of the best tripods on the planet. I use the G1298 and GT2540 EX.

All of my images are captured on 8GB Lexar Compact Flash Cards. I’ve never had a failure.

Think Tank Photo makes the bags that carry my stuff; they’ve been with me around the world without so much as a seam tear or zipper failure.

My portfolios are displayed with Evrium Fluid Galleries.

My digital files are backed up by Drobo. I sleep better at night.

Blackrapid R-Straps hold my camera bodies. If it’s possible to really love a camera strap. I do.

Lensbaby selective focus lenses inspire my creativity and help me jump my ruts.

Zink-powered Polaroid printers open doors for me, and allow me to give photographs not just take them.

Acratech GV2 Ballheads sit on top of my Gitzo tripods. Light, strong, precision made, and as sexy as a ballhead can be.

Pocket Wizard. The more I use my Canon flashes the less I know how I’d ever do it without my Pocket Wizards.

Singh-Ray Filters. Arguably the best filters made. We keep being told that digital imaging does away with filters but there are things a filter can do that post-processing simply can’t.

Artistic Photo Canvas. These folks rock my world. And my walls. Exceptional quality canvases and fantastic customer service.
