On the 14th day of the 3rd lunar month in the Chinese calendar, the birthday of the Bao Sheng Emperor is celebrated at Taipei’s Bao-an Temple, in a riot of color, firecrackers, ritual and sound. The Bao-an temple itself was constructed in 1805.
This year marks the first occasion where official visitors from Mainland China have had the opportunity to participate in the festival, a sign of improved cross-strait relations between Taiwan and China after six decades of hostility.

Craig Ferguson an Australian cultural travel photographer who has called Taiwan home for the past seven years. His journeys through Asia began with a year long trip in 1997 from South East Asia across to India and Nepal. Subsequent travels in the Asian region led to a decision to become permanently based in Asia. Craig learned to take photos as a child and has had a lifelong passion for the craft. His recent work has been published in Asian Geographic, Lonely Planet and Unearthing Asia amongst others.
